The Library

The library staff invite all students of the school to use the Internet computers, read books and magazines, do homework and assignments or play board games before school, at lunchtime or after school. The library is an attractive and inviting place, which is well used both in and out of class time.

The library is open from 8 am in the morning to 3.30 pm. On Monday afternoons there is a homework club where teachers help students one on one or in small groups until 4 pm. Senior students can use the library during their free periods and study times and they have their own study area in the library. Seniors and any student out of class must sign in at the front desk and sign out when they leave.

The library has twenty eight computers which students are allowed to use so long as they have their ID cards and do not have any overdues. We have both black and white (20c a page) and colour printing ($1 a page) facilities, as well as a photocopier (20c a page). Students though are recommended to email their assignments from home to their school accounts rather than bringing to school on disc due to viruses and other technical difficulties.

The library buys many popular magazines including Street Machine, Dolly, Playstation, Hospitality, Rolling Stone and Big League. The fiction books are selected with our school community in mind – the books of the latest movies, favourite authors, tv series and plenty of good quality stories of all kinds from picture books and graphic novels to large novels. We also have a series section to help students in locating series books, especially by varied authors, and a senior section for more mature readers. Our non fiction section has been selected to be extremely relevant to the school curriculum, as well as the interests of the students. Students can borrow up to four fiction and eight non fiction books for two weeks.

Year 7 students, at the beginning of the year, have library induction lessons, introducing them to the library and to Information Literacy - the subject of research. In 2009 they will be doing their Information Literacy with Science in Term 1 and there will be a test at the end of the term which will count towards their first semester marks. Throughout their school lives they will continue to develop their research skills and leave with the skills to be information literate which in the 21st century is a vital skill in order to be successful. Year 11 students are now doing 'All my own work', a compulsory unit devised by the Board of Studies which educates them on the rules and laws of copyright and plagerisim. Students in Year 11 must have completed this unit and passed, in order to obtain their HSC.

Any assistance you need with assignments, reading or finding out how to feed your lizard, the Teacher Librarian, Miss Johnson, and Library Assistant, Mrs Abbie, are always happy to help.
